Frequently Asked Questions About Kitchen Sink Issues

What are the most common causes of kitchen sink clogs?

Kitchen sink clogs are typically caused by grease buildup, food scraps, soap residue, coffee grounds, and fibrous vegetables. Over time, these materials stick to the inside of your pipes and restrict water flow. Even homes with garbage disposals can experience clogs if the wrong items are put down the drain. If you’re noticing slow drainage, recurring backups, or gurgling sounds, it may be time to consider professional clog detection services.

Lou’s Plumbing offers advanced clog detection services to identify the exact location and cause of blockages. Learn more about professional solutions here: https://lousplumbingfl.com/clog-detection/

How do I know if I need professional clog detection?

Warning signs include:

Slow-draining water

Standing water in the sink

Unpleasant odors from the drain

Frequent backups

Multiple drains clogging at once

If DIY methods like plunging or basic drain cleaners aren’t solving the issue, the clog may be deeper in your plumbing system. Professional clog detection uses specialized equipment to pinpoint the blockage without unnecessary damage to your pipes.

Can I use chemical drain cleaners?

While chemical cleaners may provide temporary relief, they can corrode pipes over time—especially in older homes. Repeated use can weaken plumbing and lead to costly repairs. Mechanical or professional methods are typically safer and more effective long-term.

How should I properly use a garbage disposal?

Garbage disposals are helpful but must be used correctly to prevent damage and clogs.

Best practices include:

Always run cold water before, during, and after use

Feed food gradually, not all at once

Cut large scraps into smaller pieces

Let the disposal fully clear before turning it off

Avoid putting these items down the disposal:

Grease, fats, or oils

Coffee grounds

Eggshells

Pasta and rice

Fibrous foods like celery

Bones or fruit pits

Improper use is one of the leading causes of kitchen drain problems.

What if I don’t have a garbage disposal?

If your kitchen does not have a disposal, it’s even more important to prevent food waste from entering your pipes.

Helpful tips include:

Use a sink strainer to catch food particles

Scrape plates into the trash or compost before rinsing

Never pour grease down the drain—dispose of it in a sealed container

Flush the drain weekly with hot water (not boiling) to help break down residue

Use a mixture of baking soda and vinegar occasionally to help maintain freshness

Being proactive greatly reduces the risk of clogs.

How can I keep my kitchen pipes clear year-round?

Routine maintenance is key. Here are simple habits that make a big difference:

Avoid pouring oils and grease into the sink

Run hot water after each use

Clean your sink stopper regularly

Schedule periodic professional inspections

Address slow drainage early before it becomes a full blockage

Preventative care is always more affordable than emergency plumbing repairs.

When should I call a professional plumber?

If you experience repeated clogs, water backing up into other fixtures, or suspect a deeper blockage in your system, it’s time to call a professional. Ignoring early warning signs can lead to pipe damage, leaks, or even water damage inside your home.

Water is a fundamental resource, and its quality must be maintained to ensure public health and safety. One critical component in safeguarding our water supply is a backflow preventer. This device prevents the unwanted reversal of water flow, protecting potable water from contamination due to cross-connections. In this blog post, we will guide you through the process of installing a commercial backflow preventer, a vital step for any business or institution committed to water safety.

What is a Backflow Preventer? Before delving into the installation process, let’s understand what a backflow preventer is. A backflow preventer is a mechanical device designed to stop water from flowing in the wrong direction, specifically preventing contaminated or non-potable water from flowing back into the clean water supply. In commercial settings, where cross-connections are common, backflow preventers are essential to ensure water safety.

Step 1: Assess Local Regulations and Requirements Before starting any installation, it’s crucial to research and understand the local regulations regarding backflow prevention devices. Municipalities and water authorities often have specific guidelines on the type of backflow preventer required, its installation, and periodic testing. Familiarize yourself with these rules to ensure compliance and avoid potential fines or penalties.

Step 2: Gather Necessary Tools and Equipment For a successful backflow preventer installation, gather the necessary tools and equipment beforehand. Common tools include a wrench set, pipe thread sealant tape, a hacksaw, a pipe cutter, and a pressure gauge. Additionally, you’ll need the backflow preventer itself, which should be selected based on your specific application and local regulations.

Step 3: Choose the Installation Location Selecting the appropriate location for the backflow preventer is vital. It should be placed after the water meter and before any branch lines or connections. Look for an area that is easily accessible for maintenance and inspection. Ideally, it should be protected from extreme weather conditions and potential tampering.

Step 4: Shut Off Water Supply and Drain the System Before beginning the installation, shut off the water supply to the building or the specific area where you’ll install the backflow preventer. Open all faucets and valves to drain the water from the pipes, ensuring the system is depressurized before proceeding.

Step 5: Remove Existing Pipes (If Applicable) If you are replacing an older backflow preventer or installing one for the first time, you may need to remove some existing pipes. Carefully follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper disconnection, and make sure to safely dispose of any removed components.

Step 6: Install the Backflow Preventer Follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions to install the backflow preventer securely. This process typically involves connecting the device between the water supply line and the main distribution system. Use pipe thread sealant tape to ensure watertight connections.

Step 7: Perform a Pressure Test and Check for Leaks Once the backflow preventer is installed, it’s essential to perform a pressure test to ensure there are no leaks and that the device functions correctly. Connect a pressure gauge to the test ports and verify that the pressure is stable within the recommended range.

Step 8: Record Installation Details and Schedule Periodic Maintenance After successful installation and testing, document all relevant details, including the backflow preventer model, installation date, and any other pertinent information. Additionally, establish a regular maintenance schedule to ensure the backflow preventer remains in optimal condition and compliant with regulations.

Conclusion: Installing a commercial backflow preventer is a crucial step in protecting our water supply from contamination and ensuring public safety. By following the steps outlined in this guide, you can confidently install a backflow preventer that meets local regulations and safeguards the water quality in your commercial establishment. Remember to prioritize periodic maintenance and inspections to guarantee the continued efficiency of the backflow preventer and peace of mind for years to come.

Please remember, permitting is required and the licensed professionals would make the decisions of where to install the backflow. We typically find that installation near or at the meter location is the most efficient location.

Garbage Disposal Maintenance and Upkeep

One of the more common plumbing problems that we hear about on a daily basis is problems with the garbage disposal. In most cases, the problems that we see are those that could have been prevented with the proper maintenance and upkeep for these garbage disposals. Here we are going to outline some of the more common tips to keep in mind.

11 Garbage Disposal Maintenance Tips

With your garbage disposal, you are going to want to make sure that you are treating it right. Otherwise, you will find that you have to call us to your house more often than what you would like. Plus, a garbage disposal that is treated right and is maintained is going to do the job much better than a disposal that is neglected and mistreated.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when using a garbage disposal in your home:

1. Do not put grease or fat into the disposal as this can cause the grind chamber to lock and can result in the drain line becoming blocked.
2. Hard food waste such as shellfish or pits from fruit should not be put into the garbage disposal as this is going to cause the blades to become dull.
3. Foods such as coffee, celery, egg shells and corn husks are often promoted as being able to be broken down smaller and put into the garbage disposal, however, it is better to compost these items (or throw them into the trash if composting isn’t an option)!
4. When putting food into the disposal, be sure that you are only putting the amount that would fit into a dish strainer in the disposal at one time. Over-stuffing the disposal can cause massive issues later.
5. Never leave food sitting in the disposal, always run this so that it is clean.
6. Avoid running hot water at the time in which you are disposing of foods as this can make any fat in the food harden onto the disposal.
7. You can rinse the garbage disposal with hot water once done with disposing of food, and this can actually help to keep this a bit cleaner.
8. Once a week, flush the disposal with cold water. Put in the sink stopper and then fill the sink with cold water, remove the stopper and let this drain.
9. Once a month put a tray of ice cubes into the disposal and turn on the disposal to help sharpen the blades within the disposal.
10. Always ensure that there are no forks, spoons or other utensils that have fell into the garbage disposal as these can cause massive issues.
11. If your garbage disposal stinks, this often means that there are issues with food being stuck in disposal. Be sure that you are running water for a flushing effect, as well as grinding some ice cubes. However, if you have some leftover pieces of orange, lemon or lime, simple spray the juice into the disposal to help with odors and bacteria (compost or throw away the peels).

Solving Simple Disposal Jams

Occasionally, one of the blades might catch something at an angle that stops the motor from spinning. If this is the case, look for an allen wrench/key hole on the bottom of the disposal. Find the correct size allen wrench and manually rotate the blades in both directions to try to dislodge the item causing the jam. This can often be an easy fix to prevent burning up the motor. Be sure not to turn the motor on while attempting this.

When You Need to Call the Professionals

While you may do all of these tips and ensure that your disposal is treated right, there often comes a time in which the disposal has simply worn out. Here at Lou’s Plumbing, we often recommend a garbage disposal that has the ½ horsepower dura-drive induction motor, is constructed with galvanized steel, and is considered easy installation, such as the InSinkErator Badger 5 Garbage Disposal.

However, even if you believe a new one is needed, please do not try to do this on your own. If you were to try to install this on your own, and you do mess up, it could mean more work for us, and a higher bill for you. It is best to call us as we can then figure out if a new disposal is needed, or if a simple issue is present causing the malfunction of your system.
